BOULDER, Colo. - On the first full weekend of spring in Colorado, temperatures dropped quickly as the wind increased at a faster rate on Thursday evening as the University of Colorado Buffaloes (7-2, 1-0 RMLC) prepared to take on the University of Nevada Las Vegas Rebels (6-8, 2-1 SLC).
UNLV was able to capitalize early on a man-up opportunity, taking the first lead of the game. The Buffaloes quickly answered with three goals of their own, taking an early lead that they carried to the end of the first quarter. The Buffaloes carried this streak in to the second quarter adding two more goals before UNLV was able to answer late in the second quarter to bring the score to five to two entering half time.

The Rebels came out to start the second half much like they did in the first with a quick goal. For the second time in the game, senior midfielder Greg Kelsic answered the Rebels to start the scoring for the Buffaloes in the half, and ignited a three goal run for CU. UNLV was able to answer with a run of their own to stop the Buffaloes and bring the score down to eight to six near the end of the third quarter. Not to be out-done, CU responded with three of their own sending the game to the fourth quarter up ten to six and in strong command of the game. Some added scoring by both squads lead to a final score of 12-7.
Kelsic was the centerpiece of the Colorado offense on the day, accumulating two goals and two assists. Senior goaltender Mitch Fenton faced several shots, saving nineteen and only letting seven through. Freshman goaltender Riley Rose saw action for the second time this year, saving both shots he faced.
On Saturday, the Buffaloes turned their attention to the Davenport Panthers (4-3, 2-0 CCLA ). Clear skies and sunshine brought in high 60 degree temperatures at face-off early in the afternoon. With Davenport coming off of a recent loss to Colorado State, the Panthers looked for some redemption against the second ranked Buffaloes.
Fenton showed up to play early, making several saves on the defensive end as the offense tried to get their feet under them. Colorado took the first lead of the game with goal from senior attackman Riley Seidel taking some pressure off the offense and opened up a scoring run of two goals which took the game through the end of the first quarter.
The Buffaloes did continue their run in the second quarter, increasing their lead to three while keeping Davenport off of the scoreboard until half way through the second quarter. Colorado’s Riley Seidel answered just after Davenport’s first goal giving him the hat-trick in the first half. Again, Colorado added a small run of two goals before Davenport scored their second of the game bringing the score to six to two with time winding down in the first half. Colorado continued to outgun Davenport adding two more goals before half to enter the break leading eight to two.
Davenport made some corrections at half and came out with a quick goal to attempt to gain some momentum and stage a come-back against the high octane Buffaloes. Colorado was able to answer yet again, this time with a huge five goal run before Davenport stopped the onslaught at thirteen to four. It was too little too late for Davenport though as Colorado kept scoring, bringing the final score to sixteen to four in a dominating performance by the Buffaloes.
Many of Colorado’s opportunities would not have been available if it wasn’t for a strong performance on face-offs by sophomore long-stick middie Clark Salamie. Salamie tallied fourteen wins on nineteen face-offs for the game and was backed up by another strong performance in net by Fenton, who ended the day with eleven saves.
The most dominating performance from the Buffaloes came from the Seidel. With five goals and two assists, Seidel led Colorado on offense and provided the ignition to the high powered Buffaloes offense which struggled some lately.
Next on the agenda for the Buffaloes will be a road-trip to California for the second time this season. On this trip, the Buffaloes will face both Sonoma State (7-3, 3-0 WCLL) and Stanford (6-3, 3-0 WCLL) before heading home for the final three games of the regular season.
